Kitchen Renovation in London: A Layout Brief Before You Choose Finishes
Updated: Oct 8
A kitchen renovation starts with the way the household uses the room. Cabinets and finishes are easier to compare when the layout and installation scope are clear. Use this checklist to organise the information your designer, supplier and builder will need.
Describe what the kitchen needs to do
List who cooks, whether people eat in the room and what happens during busy mornings. Note any need for a homework space, a place for shopping bags or storage for larger appliances. Write down what works in the current kitchen and what causes frustration. Specific observations are more useful than a style label on its own.
Check movement and appliance positions
Mark the routes between the kitchen, garden and adjoining rooms. Show the position of the sink, cooking area and fridge, along with the direction in which doors and drawers open. Include a dining table or island in the same drawing. Ask the designer to check the proposed arrangement against measured dimensions before committing to a cabinet order.
Build an appliance and storage schedule
Record the appliances you intend to keep and those you plan to replace. Collect model information and dimensions when available. Identify the items that need dedicated storage, such as trays, pans, cleaning equipment or recycling. Flag any appliance choice that is still undecided so the team can explain which layout decisions depend on it.
Coordinate lighting and services early
Discuss task lighting over work surfaces, general lighting and the location of controls. Show the proposed positions of sockets and appliances on the plan. Ask who is responsible for confirming the requirements of each selected appliance and coordinating the installation. Keep these details in the written scope alongside the cabinets and worktops.
Define what the builder's quote includes
Request a clear breakdown of preparation, installation, making good and finishing work. Confirm how the kitchen supplier's work connects with the building work and who will measure before manufacture. If you will remain at home, discuss temporary cooking arrangements, delivery access and the sequence of work. Our builder quote checklist helps you check the same kitchen scope, exclusions and responsibilities against each price.
