Rooflight above a dining area beside exposed brickwork

Rooflights for a London House Extension: Plan the Room First

A rooflight can change how an extension feels, but the useful starting point is the room beneath it. Before choosing a product, sketch how the kitchen, dining area and seating will work together. This guide helps you prepare those decisions for a conversation with your designer and builder.

Map daily use before positioning the opening

Place the dining table, sofa, kitchen work surfaces and any desk on the plan. Mark the route from the existing house to the garden. Think about where you need useful light and where you will use a screen. A rooflight position that looks balanced on a roof drawing may land over a circulation route rather than the part of the room you use most.

Include shading and ventilation in the brief

Observe where sunlight reaches the existing room and note which times of day matter to your household. Discuss shading and ventilation alongside the glazing, rather than leaving them until the room is finished. Ask how a blind or opening mechanism will be operated and where the controls will sit. These choices belong in the design and scope from the beginning.

Coordinate the roof and ceiling together

Ask the team to show the proposed opening in both plan and section. Review the relationship between the roof structure, ceiling finish, lighting and any visible beams. Confirm who will coordinate the rooflight specification and the surrounding construction details. The final solution needs to suit the property and the agreed design.

Make maintenance practical

Include access for cleaning and maintenance in your questions. Check what can be reached from inside, what needs external access and whether furniture affects that access. Keep the agreed product information with your project documents so later decisions do not rely on a photograph alone.
